Willow Wind Stables

We are the First Gypsy Horses in the State of Michigan. We were imported from Ireland in May of 2000. We are currently the only Registered Gypsy Vanners in Michigan and of less then 100 Gypsy Vanners in North America! We have very interesting stories to tell that we brought with us from the Emerald Isle.

We are raised and prized by the people known as The Travellers, Tinkers, or may be referred to as Gypsy`s. We played a very important role in their lives, as we pulled their homes called Vardos or caravans. After a hard days work, it then became our FAVORITE time of day, the time we spent playing with their children! WE JUST LOVE CHILDREN! We have the gentleness of a draft horse but the height of a common saddle horse. We have many interesting tales to share, so if you don`t learn or see what you want on this website please contact our mom at the email address below.

The Gypsy Horse has been around longer than most horse breeds, researchers have proven them to be in the 4th century. The Irish Travellers needed a horse that not only was strong enough to pull their 2000 to 3000 pound caravans all day, but they needed a horse that would tolerate children hanging all over them, along with all sorts of sounds, movements, city life as well as country life. These horses had to be able to thrive on grass off the side of the road, so needless to say they created this horse that we call the Gypsy Horse.

During the Horses life if it was unruly, jumpy, or showed aggressiveness towards a child they banished him and for centuries they only kept the best of the breed.

The Gypsy was created from breedings of the Shire, Clydsdale, Dales Pony, and Fells Pony. They have the temperament and steadiness of the draft but the durability of the pony.

Gypsy`s excel in Dressage, Endurance, Eventing, Jumping, and anything that has to do with Driving.
